This was a filmed version of the Olivier-winning stage production of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, specifically adapted for cinema and television. Directed for the stage by Ian Rickson and adapted by Conor McPherson, the production was turned into a film-length event during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

Lockdown Adaptation
With theaters forced to close in March 2020, the production team reconvened under strict safety protocols to film the play in situ, without a live audience. This made it the first UK theater production halted by the pandemic to be adapted for the screen.
